French soprano Rose Emma Calvé, famous opera singer of the Belle Époque. Her triumph was Bizet's Carmen, hailed as the greatest that had ever appeared, 'a creature of unbridled passion, graceful with a sensuous, suggestive grace, careless of all consequences'. Noted for her acting ability, stormy personality and dramatic intensity, she sang to acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Wrote memoirs: My Life (1922) and I've Sung Under Every Sky (1940)
