Pioneer American female journalist Nellie Bly faked insanity to study a mental institution from within, and made a record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days in emulation of Jules Verne's novel. Nicknamed 'Pink' for wearing that color as a child, she focused her early work on the plight of working women, agreed to feign insanity to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island, famed for her book: Ten Days in a Mad-House.
