Avant-garde artist, poet, model and inspiration for Duchamp, the Dada Baroness created ready-made sculptures from junk, most famously a plumbing pipe she called 'God' (1917). Using her body as art and the streets of New York as theatre, the 'Mama of Dada' wore elaborate costumes: a tomato-can bra, a bustle with a taillight, a bird cage around her neck with live canaries inside, a birthday cake on her head.
